To the family and in the idyllic »Haus Kommeles« in Leiwen a the Mosel river | Wine culture since 1925
Haus Kommeles is a former farmhouse of hewn Devon slate in the style of an Ernhaus, which was built by Mathias Weis from 1925 largely by hand in the typical Moselle-Franconian style. With its unplastered facade, the strictly symmetrical structure of residential and commercial areas and the underground vaulted cellar with metre-thick supporting walls, it is unique in Leiwen.
The name Kommeles, which has been preserved in the village community as a family name ("The Kommeleser") to this day, is based on the family's original estate on a parcel called "Auf Kommeles". Originally located directly on the Moselle, the house was abandoned in favour of a new building after the devastating Christmas floods of 1923 and a complete flooding. The house was then rebuilt on the outskirts of the village — and thus as far away as possible from the flood-prone Moselle (see photo).
From 1963 Kurt Kohl & Cäcilia Kohl (née Weis, later Thomas) ran the winery Kurt Kohl in the house Kommeles for 20 years. Until the end of the farm, only Riesling wines were produced there, among them many highly prized predicate wines, to dry berry wines and ice wines. The cultivation took place in own vineyards with an area of approx. 3.5 ha in the renowned vineyards Leiwener Laurentiuslay, Leiwener Klostergarten and Drohner Hofberger.
We haven't had wines for a long time, but the idyllic house Kommeles houses the apartment Cäcilia for 2 to 5 guests in the separate attic, which can be used completely independently. It consists of 2 large bedrooms with 2 single beds each, bathroom, kitchen, dining room and roof balcony, as well as a living room (total 71.5 sqm).1 or 2 bedrooms can be used for 2 to 4 people. Optionally, an additional single bed can be booked in the living room. Please note that a single room supplement is payable if the two bedrooms are used separately by 2 guests.
Old, but not old-fashioned — that's the motto for our cozy accommodation in a country house style. You can access a fast Internet connection with 120 Mbps plus Wi-Fi with HotSpot, as well as an HD satellite TV with Amazon FireTV Stick. Some selected family heirlooms give the property a very special and homely flair.
The apartment is located on the front side on a little busy road in the upper village of Leiwen and is about 400 meters from the town centre and from the Moselle. The two bedrooms, the dining room and the roof balcony are located on the rear and very quiet south side of the house, which is surrounded by a well-kept garden with lawn and bushes.
Holidaymakers can use a wooden hut, part of the lawn, and a separate barbecue area free of charge in the garden. Free parking spaces for vehicles are also available in the courtyard. A protected garage space in the former barn can also be rented at an extra cost.
